Yggdrasil
Acrylic on canvas 16x20"
In ancient Norse cosmology, Yggdrasil, the ever-green World Tree, connects the Nine Realms of the cosmos.

-

Our world, Earth, also called Midgard, is only one of nine worlds. Surrounding Midgard is the ancient serpent Jörmungandr, who chews on his own tail, an example of Ouroboros.

Sitting atop of Yggdrasil is an eagle who sees and knows many things. Asgard and Vanaheim, the realms of the gods, are also on Yggdrasil’s tallest branches, along with Alfheim, the realm of the light elves, and Jotunheim, the realm of giants.

Yggdrasil’s shallower roots are home to Svarthalheim, realm of the dark elves and dwarves, as well as Helheim, land of the dead. Among the deepest roots are Niflheim, the realm of primordial ice, and Muspelheim, the realm of primordial fire. A wyrm (serpent dragon) is known to knaw at one of Yggdrasil’s roots.
